Develop a tough skin

According to the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American life project, 69% of adult social media users said they “have seen people being mean and cruel to others on social network sites”. Anyone with an e-mail account can post a harassing review. Since they are anonymous and invisible they use this as a vehicle to strike back at a vendor. I am in the lice removal business. Customers come to me because I have been in business since 1996 and we are always available. Clients are angry at me that they have head lice. They know the price, they take the service, and then write a negative review if you don’t discount the agreed upon price. Yelp doesn’t stand in the vendor’s corner or even provide you a chance to explain. A post is a post and it’s there to haunt you.

How does Yelp work?

When I bought into the Yelp hype, it was explained to me that as my tenure and positive reviews increased , my Yelp ranking would improve. I followed the advice of my Yelp advisers and meticulously constructed my site and bought the extra video options for each of my locations.
Progress in the rankings was nil. Even though my lice treatment company was in business since 1996 I remained in position 20. Which is like being on Mars, as no one scrolls that far back.
What made it even more aggravating was that one of my administrators who I had to let go, went into the same business. She bad mouthed me with a fictitious review, which still remains, and she is in the number 3 position. What is the logic, who wrote the rule book?

Business aggravation.

Why is it that negative reviews stay up? While positive reviews are removed? Supposedly there is a “formula” which helps Yelp weed out phony reviews. Well it isn’t working! We see a lot of customers who come in for head lice removal this time of year. Most are sweet and treat our staff as the professionals they are. A new breed of customer has evolved. We get people who are so infested it is hard not get grossed  out. They require hours of service. After service has been provided they write you up negatively because they don’t want to pay. We treat literally hundreds of children a week. Even if one family writes you up negatively, that’s what stays up on Yelp.
